Swarthmore College to build retail center

SWARTHMORE Road construction, part of a development project at Swarthmore College, will reroute traffic through Swarthmore Borough beginning Monday.

The college is building an inn, restaurant and community store on the southern edge of its campus. Called Town Center West, development plans include a roundabout at the intersection of Rutgers Avenue and Chester Road.

Work on the roundabout will last several months. The initial phase, beginning Monday and expected to continue through Sept. 12, will occur between the hours of 8 p.m. and 5 a.m. After that phase, work is expected to occur during daytime hours.

Lane adjustments and traffic patterns will change as the work progresses, Swarthmore said in an announcement. But Chester Road will not be completely closed at any time.

The Town Center West development is expected to open in 2016. The inn, restaurant and community store will be built next to the college's athletic facilities and near the train station and the borough's retail district. College officials said it would connect the campus to the community. - Laura McCrystal
