MONTGOMERY COUNTY

Bridge reopens after 5 months

WHITEMARSH TWP. The West Valley Green Road bridge reopened Wednesday after five months of closure and extensive repairs, Montgomery County officials said.

The bridge crosses the Wissahickon Creek, connecting Whitemarsh and Springfield Townships. It was closed in March after a routine state Department of Transportation inspection found it unsafe.

County maintenance workers were able to make temporary repairs, "which required special rigging to get underneath," said County Commissioner Leslie S. Richards.

"There's no other bridge like it. Having crossed it many times, I can say there should be no other bridge like it," Richards said.

The steel-truss bridge was designed in 1884 and reinforced in 1953, according to PennDot.

Inspections will continue every six months while the county is working on designs for a replacement.
