Leona Scott, school librarian in Burlco

When Leona Harker Scott was born on her family's dairy farm in Pemberton Township in 1919, she became one of six children delivered by her mother's aunt on that farm, daughter Judy McKeon said.

The relative was a midwife who also delivered all of Mrs. Scott's siblings - three sisters and two brothers.

"She was not a farm girl," and not only did she not have to do the farm chores as some others did, but as they grew up, "none of them liked milk," McKeon said.

On Saturday, Aug. 2, Mrs. Scott, 95, of Pemberton Borough, a former volunteer school librarian there, died at Aspen Hills Healthcare Center in Pemberton Township.

She skipped a grade, graduated in 1936 from Pemberton High School, and left the farm to work as a cashier at the W.T. Grant Co. store in Mount Holly.

She married in 1942 and, while her husband, Thomas, served with a Navy Construction Battalion in the South Pacific, lived in a rented room in Mount Holly and worked as a phone operator for New Jersey Bell Telephone Co.

Mrs. Scott recalled "putting calls through for the servicemen from Fort Dix," but she wasn't allowed to talk to them about much more than the phone number, her daughter said.

In the 1960s, she worked at the former Pemberton Borough School, a primary school, as its unpaid volunteer librarian.

"She would have been the only one" working in the library, "several hours each day, three, four days a week," her daughter said.

Mrs. Scott was a member of the parent-teacher association at that school and a leader of a Girl Scout troop, in the late 1950s and into the early 1960s.

She was a member of the borough's board of elections in the 1970s and 1980s, her daughter said.

As a member of Grace Episcopal Church in Pemberton, she belonged to the national organization Episcopal Church Women.

And as part of a farm family, she had been a member of the Pemberton Grange in the 1930s and into the 1940s.

Besides her daughter, Mrs. Scott is survived by son William; a sister; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. Her husband died in 1989.

A viewing and visitation was set from 10 to 11 a.m. Friday, Aug. 8, at the Lankenau Funeral Home, 31 Elizabeth St., Pemberton, before an 11 a.m. funeral service there, with interment in Odd Fellows Cemetery, Pemberton.
