Man in critical after car rolls away, causing crash

A man was critically injured after he attempted to stop the BMW he was operating from rolling out of a gas station and into traffic at the height of Wednesday's morning commute near a Schuykill Expressway entrance in Bala Cynwyd, police said.

About 7:20 a.m., Lower Merion Township Police said, a man drove his 2014 BMW to a gas pump at Belmont Petro, on Belmont Avenue near Rock Hill Road.

As soon as he got out of the car, he realized he had not put the vehicle in park and got back in to try to stop it from rolling away. As he did so, he turned the steering wheel, and the BMW proceeded out of the station, across the lane of traffic heading toward the Schuylkill, and hit a 2002 Infiniti.

The driver of the Infiniti wasn't hurt, but the other man, who was not identified, suffered serious injuries and was listed in critical condition at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, police said.

Belmont Avenue between Old Belmont Avenue and Rock Hill Road was closed until 9:35 a.m. as police investigated the accident.
