Schuylkill wins river awards, money

WEST CHESTER Chester County awarded $10,000 to the Schuylkill River Heritage Area recently and congratulated the group for the river's winning of the 2014 Pennsylvania river of the year award.

Kurt Zwikl, the organization's executive director, called the Schuylkill central to many environmental initiatives in Schuylkill, Berks, Montgomery, Philadelphia and Chester Counties. The group plans to use the money to continue preserving the river's historic, environmental, and recreational resources.

Chester County issued a citation commending the Schuylkill River Heritage Area for its dedication in protecting and promoting the culture and history of the river. The organization was also rewarded for its work when the general public chose the Schuylkill for the 2014 state award in an online vote last year.

The $10,000 award is part of the county's annual allotment for organizations and nonprofits throughout the county. Twenty-six miles of the 128-mile Schuylkill run through Chester County.
