Joan H. Hummel, 83, of Philadelphia and Palm Beach, Fla., a businesswoman, died Sunday, July 20, of pneumonia at Temple University Hospital.

Mrs. Hummel was married for 57 years to Dennis Hummel. Together, they built the family business, Metropolitan Reporting Bureau, which supplies information to the insurance industry from offices in Center City.

Mrs. Hummel grew up in Yeadon and graduated from Yeadon High School. She earned a bachelor's degree in English at Temple University, where she was a cheerleader and president of Alpha Sigma Pi.

She and her husband met in the business world of Philadelphia.

She had served as president of Metropolitan Reporting Bureau since 1957. She retired 15 years ago and split her time among Philadelphia, Palm Beach, and Ocean City, N.J.

Her passions were her family, friends, playing Scrabble, solving crossword puzzles, reading, dining out, shopping, and discussing the news.

She supported the Friends of Rittenhouse Square and the Philadelphia Museum of Art.

Surviving, in addition to her husband, are a son, Holden; a daughter, Victoria Kreider; two grandchildren; a brother; and nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held from 5:30 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, July 22, at the Union League of Philadelphia, 140 S. Broad St. Interment is private.
