Woman fatally struck by SUV in N.E. Phila.

A 48-year-old woman attempting to help her grandchild out of her parked truck was fatally struck by another vehicle Tuesday morning in lower Northeast Philadelphia, police said.

The woman was parked on the southbound side of the 4600 block of Castor Avenue across from the Northwood Academy Charter School and standing next to her 2013 Ford F-150 about 10 a.m. when she was hit by a 2004 Buick Rainier driven by a 25-year-old man, police said.

The man told police that traffic stopped suddenly and that his SUV hit the rear driver-side door of the Ford, pinning the woman against his front bumper. Medics took the woman to Temple University Hospital, where she was pronounced dead at 1 p.m. The grandchild was not hurt. The accident remained under investigation, police said. - Robert Moran
