Newtown boy is national science finalist

Local boys are national finalists

NEWTOWN Rishi Mago, a 13-year-old Newtown resident, was recently named one of 30 national finalists for the 2014 Google International Science Fair competition, one of two area residents to earn the distinction.

The competition is a "global online science and technology competition," according to its website, and it challenges teenagers across the world to develop projects to address various questions.

Mago's project, according to a write-up on the science fair's website, explores whether students could better learn vocabulary words using visualization techniques, such as imagining scenes involving the term.

Another area resident, Matthew Siracusa, 13, of Newtown Square, was also selected as a finalist, for developing a way to monitor fracking sites from a moving vehicle. - Chris Palmer
