Many Peco customers lose power

Thousands of Peco customers in northern Bucks County lost power Monday afternoon as a result of a malfunction at a substation, a county official said.

While parts of the region were hit with intense downpours Monday, with significant flooding reported in Montgomery County, Peco spokesman Gret Smore said it was unclear if the weather had anything to do with the outages.

County spokesman Chris Edwards said the malfunction occurred at the substation in Buckingham Township and resulted in more than 30,000 outages.

Peco's website had put the total at more than 32,000; however, Smore said the actual number was closer to 10,000. He said the numbers on the map evidently were the result of the "double-counting" of customers.

As for the cause of the problem, said Smore, "we don't really know."

An investigation was continuing.

Edwards said that electricity had been restored to all but 300 by 5:45 p.m. - Ben Finley
