A man is in critical condition after a drunk driver hit him while he was crossing the street on crutches early Saturday morning, police said.

The 49-year-old man was in the crosswalk, traveling north across Frankford Avenue, on Sheffield Street in Holmesburg, just after midnight, police said. Witnesses told police the traffic light changed to green while the man was partway through the intersection. He tried to get out of the way, according to preliminary police information, "but was slowed down by the use of his crutches."

George Mullen, 25, of Warminster, allegedly drove his 2001 Ford Taurus into the man, police said, causing him to go airborne and suffer a severe head injury.

The 49-year-old man was unconscious at the scene and later listed in critical condition at Aria Health-Torresdale Campus.

Mullen was charged with drunk driving and related charges, police said.
