Bear still loose in Bucks

The state Game Commission failed to capture a black bear roaming around New Britain Township late Wednesday.

THE BUCKS County black bear is back: Tell your friends.

Specifically, tell them to stay away from the 250-pound beast, which the state Game Commission tried to capture late Wednesday night.

Police in New Britain Township saw that the bear, which moseyed through the area for most of Wednesday afternoon, had finally slowed down, Cheryl Trewella, a spokeswoman for the Game Commission, said last night.

They contacted a local conservation officer, who tried to shoot the furry visitor with a tranquilizer dart.

It's unclear if he hit his mark, because the bear fled into a nearby wooded area after the officer took the shot, Trewella said.

About 45 minutes later, the bear reemerged, but shook off his tail a second time in the woods.

"By that time, it's dark, he's a black bear, and the decision was made to let it go for the evening," Trewella said.

There was no sign of the bear yesterday, but authorities in New Britain Township were in a "holding pattern," she said.

Anyone who sees the bear should call 215-348-3524.
