Singing a scam tune

DEAR HARRY: I just got scammed by email. Everything seemed so legitimate. I went to a website that had an ad on TV. They had three discs for sale that fit into my music library perfectly. They even had some of the music available for me to hear before buying. I made the mistake of paying by check. The discs they sent me were obviously used. The artists were not the ones they advertised. One of the discs was useless. I got nowhere by email and telephone. Finally, after three weeks of trying, I was notified that the company was no longer reachable due to "major financial problems." I now am in debt for the $50 not guaranteed on my credit card. I guess I'm just as mad at myself as the scam artists. Is there anything I can do now?

WHAT HARRY SAYS: In view of what you just learned, I doubt very much that you can do anything. It is worth a try, however. We have a relatively new agency that is pretty successful in similar situations. Call the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau at 855-411-2372. If that fails, let's try a long shot by contacting your member of Congress. In an election year, you may get more attention than you would normally. But don't get your hopes up.
