Bucks principal apologizes for using DeGeneres photo

NEWTOWN The principal of a Catholic school apologized to parents for using a photograph of Ellen DeGeneres on an invitation to an Oscars-themed graduation dance and is demanding that students return the invitations to be destroyed.

It was "completely wrong" to use DeGeneres' picture, St. Andrew Elementary School principal Nancy Matteo wrote Tuesday in an e-mail, because the talk-show host and sit-com star "lives her life outside the teachings of the Catholic Church."

The e-mail doesn't specifically mention DeGeneres' sexual orientation. She came out as a lesbian in 1997 and married the actress Portia de Rossi in 2008. This year, she hosted the Oscars ceremony for a second time.

Matteo, who declined to comment, said in the e-mail to parents that students needed to return the invitations featuring DeGeneres to the school and that new ones would be issued.

A spokesman for the Archdiocese of Philadelphia said the principal apologized on her own accord after parents questioned the photo. - Emily Babay
