Ritz asks for help and gets it

BLINQ The Ritz Theatre Company asked for help, and the audiences it has entertained for three decades responded.

A Facebook plea by founder and director Bruce Curless, and an April 5 fund-raiser that transformed the beloved Haddon Township theater into a party, together netted nearly $100,000. The sold-out "Rock the Ritz" event featured bands, burlesque, assorted divas, and dancing in the aisles, and raised over $11,000.

"With the support we have received, we have a wonderful foundation to build upon," Curless said in an e-mail, adding, "We have an accumulative deficit that we are taking a big hunk out of and we look ahead with excitement and sound fiscal planning.

"After the event on Saturday night, our grand total is $99,597.02. . . . We are feeling so blessed and thankful. There aren't words!"

Ever the showman, Curless also is busy promoting the latest main stage and special productions, including The Wild Party, which opens May 1. The Ritz's first all-youth production, Disney's The Little Mermaid, will run from Thursday through April 19.

"The beat goes on," Curless said.
