Police: Bucks man killed mother with fumes

BENSALEM A Bucks County man was charged Tuesday with killing his 59-year-old mother with carbon-monoxide fumes from a portable generator, police said.

BENSALEM A Bucks County man was charged Tuesday with killing his 59-year-old mother with carbon-monoxide fumes from a portable generator, police said.

Koustantinos Yiambilis, 30, is accused of using the portable generator Monday night to kill Karen Yiambilis at Longmeadow Apartments in the 300 block of Bristol Road, Bensalem police said.

District Attorney David W. Heckler said the son had been warned not to operate the generator inside the apartment, which he shared with his mother.

"We are entirely satisfied he intended his mother's death," Heckler said. "He may have intended his own death."

About 11:25 p.m., police and fire personnel responded to complaints from neighbors about fumes coming from inside one of the units. Emergency responders banged on the door and windows, and Koustantinos Yiambilis opened the door, police said.

Police found his mother unconscious on a bedroom floor. She was taken to Aria Health-Torresdale Campus, where she died. Her son also was taken to the hospital.

Residents from four adjacent units were evacuated until fire officials deemed the scene safe.

He was charged with criminal homicide, risking a catastrophe, recklessly endangering another person, and related offenses.

He was being held without bail at Aria Torresdale and will be transported to the Bucks County prison once he is released from the hospital.
