Jonathan Schell | Antiwar activist, 70

Jonathan Schell, 70, the antiwar activist and author of the prize-winning The Fate of the Earth, died of cancer Tuesday at his home in New York, said his companion, Irena Gross.

He wrote several books but was best known for The Fate of the Earth, published in 1982, which drew upon years of stories he had written for the New Yorker. The book was a major text for opponents of the nuclear arms race and won the Los Angeles Times Book Prize. - AP
