Historical commission to honor Chesco's Graceanna Lewis

Marker to honor Graceanna Lewis

KIMBERTON The Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission is scheduled to dedicate and install a historical marker to honor humanitarian and scientist Graceanna Lewis on Saturday.

The event, free and open to the public, is set for noon in front of the Kimberton Inn, 2105 Kimberton Rd., Kimberton.

A short program is to precede the unveiling.

Born in West Vincent Township, Lewis (1821-1912) was a Quaker abolitionist and active in the Phoenixville branch of the Underground Railroad. She was also a scientist of botany and zoology and won a bronze medal at the World's Columbian Exposition in 1893 for her paintings of flora and fauna.

The commission earlier this month approved the dedication of 21 new state historical markers.
