Meals on Wheels receives $10,000

WEST CHESTER The Chester County commissioners have given $10,000 to the county's Meals on Wheels program, the county announced Tuesday.

The award will buy meals for homebound Chester County residents and is the first of its kind from the county, which usually gives money solely to help cover administrative costs. The county's 20 Meals on Wheels chapters served more than 68,000 meals to 600 people last year.

"It's more than just delivering a meal," said Jeani Purcell, director of Meals on Wheels of Chester County. "People look forward to that visit once a day. It gives them a connection with the community."

The number of people needing meals is increasing as more Chester County residents become seniors, so the organization always needs volunteers, she said.

During last week's Community Champions Week, a national Meals on Wheels campaign to raise awareness about senior hunger, volunteers to the county's program included State Sen. Andrew Dinniman (D., Chester), State Rep. John Lawrence (R., Chester), the county's three commissioners, Phoenixville Mayor Michael Speck, Spring City Mayor Michael Weiss, and township managers from East Bradford, West Bradford, and Spring City.
