Bruce Parkinson, 86, golfer, tournament official

Bruce S. Parkinson 86, of Audubon, a longtime golfer and tournament official, who volunteered his services during the 2013 U.S. Open at Merion, died Friday, March 21, of complications from a metabolic disorder at Lankenau Hospital.

A Golf Association of Philadelphia volunteer for nearly four decades, Mr. Parkinson would be out weekends officiating in tournaments for players at all skill levels. In 2009, the group honored him for his service with the Distinguished Service Award.

In June 2013, he was captain of the marshals for the 14th hole during the U.S. Open in Merion. "He was exuberant from the experience," his family said.

Mr. Parkinson competed in Golf Association of Philadelphia tournaments. The highlight came when he and his wife, Marianne, won the Women's Golf Association of Philadelphia Powell Cup. In doing so, they set a record at that time for total points.

Over the years, he was a member of Aronimink Country Club, the former Seaview Country Club, and Moselem Springs Golf Club.

He lived in Wayne for many years before moving to Audubon in 2013. While in Wayne, he played for 50 years at St. Davids Golf Club, and served on the committee that built a new clubhouse.

"He had a love for St. Davids, and was always willing to do his part," his family said.

Mr. Parkinson graduated from the George School and Washington and Lee University.

During the Korean War, he served in the Army. Afterward, he joined E.J. Spangler, an envelope-manufacturing company owned by his father-in-law. Mr. Parkinson was president of the firm until it was sold. He went on to consult in the specialty-envelope business for Whiting-Patterson Co. Inc. and the American Printing & Envelope Co. He never retired.

A longtime member of Wayne Presbyterian Church, he was a member of the Union League of Philadelphia and the Rotary Club of Philadelphia. He was active in the Republican Party in Chester County.

He met his wife, the former Marianne Colville, on the beach in Ocean City, N.J. The couple enjoyed summers there with family and friends.

In addition to his wife of 60 years, he is survived by daughters Jean Kozicki and Janet Haufler and two grandchildren.

A funeral service will be 11 a.m. Wednesday, March 26, at Wayne Presbyterian Church, 125 E. Lancaster Ave., Wayne, Pa. 19087. Friends may call starting at 10 a.m. in the connecting hall of the church. Interment is private.
