Sitter pleads guilty in tot's death

GLOUCESTER CITY A Westville woman admitted Thursday to causing the death July 5, 2011, of a 2-year-old girl she was babysitting. Sheila Polanski, 36, will serve 12 years in prison after pleading guilty to aggravated manslaughter in the death of Madeline McHenry of Gloucester City.

Polanski admitted to shaking and slamming the child against the floor after she would not stop crying.

She initially said the bruises on the child had occurred through a series of falls. In court Thursday, according to a statement from the prosecutor's office, she admitted to shaking Madeline and to waiting to seek medical treatment for the girl after she became unresponsive.

Madeline was taken to the hospital about 3:30 p.m. that day and pronounced dead two days later.

As part of the plea, Polanski must serve 85 percent before parole eligibility. Sentencing is scheduled for May 2 in Camden before Superior Court Judge Edward McBride.
