Boys & Girls Club selects 2014 Youth of the Year

CAMDEN Abigail Jimenez of Camden has been selected the 2014 Boys & Girls Club of Camden County Youth of the Year. The club - which provides educational support, mentoring, access to technology, swimming, career exploration, and other activities for youth in difficult circumstances - made the announcement Friday.

Jimenez, 18, was chosen from among five other local outstanding youth from her club by a panel of volunteers and board members. She will next compete against other Boys & Girls Club members for the New Jersey State Youth of the Year title and a $1,000 college scholarship from Tupperware Brands Corp.

Judges said Jimenez fit the mold of an extraordinary young woman recognized "for her sound character, leadership skills and willingness to give back to the community." They cited her countless responsibilities at the local club, including part-time registrar, bilingual tutor, volunteer for club activities, and mentor to other members.

Being named Youth of the Year is the highest honor a Boys & Girls Club member can receive. Jimenez, a senior at Camden County Technical School at the Pennsauken Campus, has been a member of the Camden County club for more than five years. She plans to pursue a career as an accountant, at Rutgers University.

"Abi has been one of our shining stars, and we're proud that she is on track to graduate and take the next steps to continue her education," Bernadette Shanahan, executive director at the Boys & Girls Club of Camden County, said in a statement. "This is just the beginning for her."
