Two Chesco Rotary clubs stage "food fight

After the holiday season, a time when donations typically drop off, two Rotary Clubs are competing this month to collect the most donated items for the Chester County Food Bank.

Recent bad weather has worsened the Food Bank's situation.

The "food fight" between the Thorndale-Downingtown and Coatesville clubs will last until March 3, after which State Sen. Andrew Dinniman (D., Chester) will declare the winner. The goal is to collect one ton of food between the clubs.

The losing club must take the winning club to Victory Brewing Co. in Downingtown for pizza and beer.

"We've had a couple of the Coatesville people come to our meetings and tell us how we're going to lose," said Jack Hines, treasurer of the Thorndale-Downingtown club. "The key is, it's a contest, but it's one of those things where everybody wins."

The clubs hope to expand their friendly competition into a yearly event that includes all of Chester County's Rotary Clubs.

The Thorndale-Downingtown club lists its many drop-off locations on its website, www.thorndalerotary.org. Collection locations for the Coatesville club include Brandywine Hospital, Brandywine YMCA, the Coatesville Area Senior Center, and the Coatesville City Clock Apartments, 235 E. Lincoln Highway. - Michaelle Bond
