S. Kolins, store owner

Sophia Girten Kolins, 94, of Erial, co-owner of a former Southwest Philadelphia military surplus store, died Thursday, Jan. 16, at Jefferson University Hospital.

Born in Philpot, Ky., Mrs. Kolins was an assembler of radio tubes before joining the Women's Army Auxiliary Corps after it was established in 1942.

When the corps was converted to the Women's Army Corps in 1943, she became a stock record clerk and was stationed in the Rhineland. She met her future husband, Herbert, in Frankfurt.

"She was a trailblazer" by serving as a military volunteer, her daughter, Francine Guokas, said.

Besides her daughter, Mrs. Kolins is survived by son Russell, two sisters, and two grandchildren.

Graveside services were set for 1 p.m. Friday, Jan. 17, at Crescent Memorial Park, 7349 Westfield Ave., Pennsauken.
