Elmwood Park Zoo seeks winter donations
NORRISTOWN The Elmwood Park Zoo closed due to the cold Tuesday, but the animals still had to be cared for. A donation drive aims to help the zoo weather through the blustery winter.
Development officer Jennifer Conti said that during winter, admissions decrease "down to zero most days."
Meanwhile, costs for bedding, food, and other expenses increase. Utility bills alone increase more than 60 percent in the winter, Conti said.
"It takes increased resources to run the Elmwood Park Zoo during the lean winter months . . . and ensure all our animals remain happy, healthy, safe, and warm every single day," said Conti.
With a separate Winter Care fund, the zoo hopes to keep more of its budget open for new programs and animals - such as the giraffes that visited last summer.
Donations to the Norristown Zoological Society are tax-deductible and can be made online, at elmwoodparkzoo.org, or to Elmwood Park Zoo, Attn: Winter Care, 1661 Harding Blvd., Norristown, Pa. 19401.
