WEST PHILA. A woman suffered minor graze wounds when a man apparently discharged a gun accidentally Friday afternoon at a Market-Frankford Line station in West Philadelphia, authorities said.

Police said a man later called 911 and identified himself as the person whose gun went off. He was expected to be questioned by detectives Friday night, police said.

About 3:15 p.m., a man was leaning over a bench rummaging through a bag at the 40th Street station's eastbound platform when the gun discharged into the bench, said Police Lt. John Stanford.

A woman sitting on a nearby bench suffered a graze wound to her right cheek and a bruise on an arm from an impact projectile, said SEPTA spokeswoman Jerri Williams.

The projectile "hits the metal bench, bounces off [a] wall, through the trash can, and strikes her," Stanford said.

Williams did not know if the 22-year-old woman sought medical treatment.

The man got on the next arriving train, she said.

The bench where the man had been sustained damage that appeared to be caused by a large-caliber firearm, she said.
