Bucks County man dies of West Nile virus
BUCKS COUNTY A Bucks County man was reported dead Friday of West Nile virus, officials at the state Department of Environmental Protection said.
The man, whose name and address were not released, began exhibiting symptoms Aug. 20. Human cases of the virus were also reported this week by a woman in Philadelphia and a woman in Delaware County. The state has reported seven human cases of the virus in five counties; the other cases have been in York and Montgomery counties.
There are no medications to treat the virus, and no vaccine will prevent it. The good news, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention: only about 1 in 5 people who are infected will develop a fever and other symptoms, and less than 1 percent of those infected will develop "a serious, sometimes fatal, neurologic illness."
