A 21-year-old man is in critical condition after his friend accidentally shot him Friday night in East Frankford, police said.

Police arrived around 9:15 p.m. at a house on the 1600 block of Dyre Street for a "person with a gun" report, a police spokeswoman said. The 21-year-old man was lying on the ground on the third-floor attic of the house.

He had been shot in the head/neck area.

The man was taken to Aria Health-Torresdale Campus, where he remained in critical condition Saturday morning.

He was shot by his friend, a 19-year-old man who remained on the scene and was taken into custody by police without incident. The friend told police he had been handling the gun when it accidentally went off.

He faces charges of reckless endangerment, aggravated assault, gun offenses, and related charges. Police have not released his identity.
