Study: Park a city boon

Independence Park spending analyzed.

Independence National Historical Park generated about $150 million in visitor spending in 2011, according to a new economic impact report.

The spending supported just over 2,000 jobs in the Philadelphia region, according to the analysis.

The report, conducted by Michigan State University at the behest of the National Park Service, shows that Independence Park, combined with other sites administered by the park - the Thaddeus Kosciuszko National Memorial and the Edgar Allan Poe National Historic Site - drew 3.59 million visitors in 2011.

Visitors spent more than $151 million supporting 2,103 jobs, the report states.

Cynthia MacLeod, park superintendent, cited the park's iconic places as a powerful magnet for tourists.

"We know that visitors who come to see Independence Hall often stay for multiple days," she said in a statement. That helps "generate significant contributions to the local, state, and national economy."

The data on Independence Park is drawn from a study of all parks nationally.

For 2011, the report shows $13 billion in direct spending by 279 million park visitors in areas within 60 miles of a national park. Overall, visitor spending had a $30 billion impact on the entire economy and supported 252,000 jobs across the country.

Most spending supported jobs in hotels, motels, other kinds of lodging, and food and beverage service. To a lesser degree, visitors spent on entertainment, retail, transportation, and fuel.
