Powerball ticket wins $217 million jackpot

Powerball and Mega Millions both had their jackpots won in the latest drawings.

Powerball and Mega Millions both had their jackpots won in the latest drawings.

Powerball's, though, was much bigger - $217.2 million compared to $19 million for Mega Millions.

The winning Powerball ticket, bought in the Richmond area, matched all the numbers drawn last night: 5, 27, 36, 38 and 41, with a Powerball of 12.

As a result, Saturday's Powerball jackpot reboots to $40 million, or $25.1 million cash.

Expect the winner to collect the cash - worth $136.4 million, since nobody's opted for the annuity in more than five years. That's a run of more than 70 Powerball winners.

The jackpot is the seventh in a year with a cash payout that topped $100 million.

Where exactly the winning ticket was sold should be announced later today, according to the Virginia Lottery, which notes that the winner has to stake the claim in 180 days.

Many states, including Pennsylvania and New Jersey, give winners a year to claim a prize.

A Rhode Island ticket won $2 million for matching the first five numbers, while having the Power Play prize-boosting option. Six tickets - two sold in New York, one each in Connecticut, Illinois, Kentucky and Arizona - won $1 million for matching the first five without the Power Play.

Mega Millions. A Michigan ticket won the $19 million in Tuesday night's drawing by matching all the numbers - 2, 5, 10, 26 and 44, with a Mega Ball of 46. The ticket was sold at a Festival Foods store in Houghton.

California sold two tickets that matched the first five, each winning $245,064 each under that state's pari-mutuel system. Texas sold one that will pay out $250,000.

Friday's Mega Millions jackpot will be worth $12 million.
