A 28-year-old man was fatally shot during an attempted robbery in front of his house Wednesday night in West Philadelphia, police said.

The victim was returning home to the 1200 block of South Millick Street when he was approached by an armed young man announcing a robbery around 9:45 p.m., police said. The victim told the gunman he didn't have any money and there was some type of heated exchange, police said. That drew the attention of the victim's sister, who stepped outside to see what was happening.

The assailant fired once at the victim, striking him in the side. The victim retreated into his enclosed porch and collapsed. He was transported to the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, where he later died. The gunman was still at large.
