Suspect shot dead after striking Temple student, cop car

A female police officer shot and killed a suspect today in North Philadelphia after police said the man struck a Temple student and another officer's car on Broad Street with his pickup truck.

A female police officer shot and killed a suspect today in North Philadelphia after police said the man struck a Temple student and another officer's car on Broad Street with his pickup truck.

A narcotics officer in an unmarked vehicle parked on Broad Street near Oxford first spotted the suspect as his blue pickup truck jumped a curb in a parking lot around 10:30 a.m., hit several parked cars, and then struck the male Temple student, according to police.

The officer ran to the scene and attempted to get the suspect out of his truck, but he refused, and then struck the officer's vehicle. The officer fired two or three times at the truck, but the man fled and abandoned his car nearby on 20th Street near Master, police said.

The suspect ran through two vacant lots before he was confronted by the female officer, who shot at him after he made a threatening remark and she saw him reach for an object, police said.

The suspect reportedly said "step back or I'm going to blow your brains out," police said. Police said no weapon was found on the suspect, but they are canvassing the areas he ran through.

The Temple student, identified as 20 or 21 years old, is in stable condition at Temple Hospital, while the suspect was pronounced dead a little while later at Hahnemann University Hospital.

Police said they found drug paraphernalia in the suspect's truck.
