Cops seek aggressive Flyers fans in post-Classic brawl

The New York Rangers may have beaten the Flyers in Monday's Winter Classic, but after the game Flyers fans beat Rangers fans outside Geno's Steaks in South Philly.

The New York Rangers may have beaten the Flyers in Monday's Winter Classic, but after the game Flyers fans beat Rangers fans outside Geno's Steaks in South Philly.

Now police are asking the public's help in identifying the fans responsible for the fight, which took place about 7:15 p.m. outside the iconic cheesesteak emporium at 9th Street and Passyunk Avenue.

A video of the brawl circulated on social media but has since been removed from YouTube. However, an edited version provided by police shows a large white man throwing off his fur-trimmed coat to reveal a No. 28 Claude Giroux Flyers jersey.

The man, described by police as "the main aggressor," throws the first punch at a man in a Rangers jersey. The main aggressor and another Flyers fan in a Jaromir Jagr jersey then beat the Rangers fan while he's on the ground.

Lt. Ray Evers, police spokesman, said the Rangers fan who was beaten filed a police report with Philly cops Tuesday after seeking medical treatment in New Jersey.

Evers said the man required stitches, and when that happens it ratchets up a fight to aggravated-assault charges.

Meanwhile, another Philadelphia fight that made the rounds on social media this week, between a Mummer in a dress and another man on 2nd Street, is not being investigated by police because there were no apparent injuries and no police report was filed, Evers said.

Tipsters in the case outside Geno's Steaks are asked to call South Detectives, at 215-686-3013.
