Bike-patrol cop injured in crash

A BIKE-PATROL police officer was hospitalized yesterday after being hit by a car while crossing Market Street on her bike, police said.

A BIKE-PATROL police officer was hospitalized yesterday after being hit by a car while crossing Market Street on her bike, police said.

Chief Inspector Scott Small said that the officer was headed to Macy's, at 13th and Market streets, to search a person being held at the store for suspected shoplifting. A newer-model BMW struck the rear tire of her bike on Market Street just east of the intersection with 13th at about 5 p.m.

Small said that the officer briefly lost consciousness after the accident and was taken to Thomas Jefferson University Hospital, where she was listed in stable condition. He said that the officer, assigned to the Center City District, didn't suffer broken bones, but would be checked for brain injuries.

The driver stayed at the scene after the accident, police said, and officers from the Accident Investigation Division determined that the driver hadn't violated any traffic laws.

Neither of the car's two occupants was injured, Small said.
