Colleges alter move-in schedule

The move-in of students returning to the Rowan University campus - originally set for Sunday - has been canceled in anticipation of Hurricane Irene hitting New Jersey that day.

Upper class residents living in Rowan Boulevard Apartments may now move in by appointment on Monday or Tuesday. All other upper class residents may move in on Monday. Freshman move-in day will be held as planned on Saturday.

At Rutgers University in Camden, a small number of foreign students will move in this weekend as planned. The rest of the students are expected to begin returning to campus on Monday.

"We're certain that won't be impacted by the weather," said Rutgers spokesman Mike Sepanic, adding that the largest number of students are likely to move in on Wednesday.

At Rutgers' New Brunswick campus, the move-in has been rescheduled to Saturday. It had been originally set for Sunday. A new-student convocation on Sunday also has been canceled.

Other area schools also were announcing altered move-in plans Thursday.

Among them was Haverford College, which is allowing students to move in early into their dorms, on Friday, to avoid the worst of the storm. The college said on its website that the schedule for Saturday arrivals also could be "modified as conditions warrant," urging students to check for updates.

The college has shuffled some events and athletic events to avoid Sunday's storm and is preparing for the possibility of delivering box meals to students, according to its website.

Temple University has moved up to Friday student arrivals scheduled for Sunday, with check-ins also permitted Saturday.
