Before a Philadelphia courtroom packed with police officers, spectators and family members of slain police officer Chuck Cassidy, John "Jordan" Lewis this morning pleaded guilty to murdering the officer and to committing six armed robberies.
The guilty plea on the "general murder count" means that the jury will now determine if Lewis is guilty of 1st degree or 2nd degree murder.
Third degree murder is no longer an option.
Most in the courtroom had no clue that Lewis, 23, of North Philadelphia, had planned to plead guilty to anything on what is the first day of testimony in his trial.
Lewis is facing death for shooting Cassidy, 54, during a holdup of a Dunkin' Donuts store in West Oak Lane on Oct. 31, 2007.
