Man pleads guilty in murder of Officer Cassidy

Before a Philadelphia courtroom packed with police officers, spectators and family members of slain police officer Chuck Cassidy, John "Jordan" Lewis this morning pleaded guilty to murdering the officer and to committing six armed robberies.

The guilty plea on the "general murder count" means that the jury will now determine if Lewis is guilty of 1st degree or 2nd degree murder.

Third degree murder is no longer an option.

Most in the courtroom had no clue that Lewis, 23, of North Philadelphia, had planned to plead guilty to anything on what is the first day of testimony in his trial.

Lewis is facing death for shooting Cassidy, 54, during a holdup of a Dunkin' Donuts store in West Oak Lane on Oct. 31, 2007.

The jury has only one option -- this is first a degree murder with the most callous disregard for life. Lewis intended to shoot Officer Cassidy, as is evident from the CCTV tapes that will never be shown now. Philly's DAs don't like to enforce the death penalty, so they structure cases to allow ambivalence to the highest degree possible, but this is one case where not enforcing the law, the death penalty, tears at the fabric of society. This is not representing the "rights" of the killer, this is trying to dismantle the law. The message needs to be clear -- life is not a video game, and the needle is the end for cop-killers. Killing a cop is not a political statement. It's not a way to carry out jihad. Killing a cop means death in PA. Do we have to have a Republican governor in order to simply carry out the law as it is written? Do we have to rewrite sentencing guidelines so that PA can get to a fair process that respects victims, such as what you see in VA? Can't Democrats see that they hurt their own credibility in trying to write the law from dismantling the bench?

People are still hurting from this, and from all the cop-killings in Philly, as you can see from the first comment. Where is our redress? Where is our clemency? Where is our justice?

"CLEANUPPHILLY" It will be the jury who decides about the death penalty. I think they will give him life.

This young man made a mistake. Living in Philadelphia, growing up without the advantages of...blah, blah, blah but killing a police officer in a colonial city within a commonwealth state, he's asking for the death penalty.

Too many guns on the streets with the bad guys hands on them. IF PEOPLE started getting executed for murder faster then most of these crimes would stop.

How soon before they can execute that mofo. Killing cops should automatically put killer in the electric chair within 30 days of the trial. Why wait 8 to 12 years feeding this goon when they can put the hammer down sooner.

I agree he should get the death penalty but for what in Pennsylvania, it goes no where. All it does is keep the families running back and forth to court on appeals. It's ridiculous to work, live, or play here in Philly! We need some fresh meet and protest. I mean real protest the kind they had in the 60's when I was young. Things got done. Stop the Trolley cars from running in chestnut hill. They're on the track. New Yorkers get what they want because they stop traffic on Bridges! I bet they'll steal IV bads from Michael Jackson to put them to sleep!

They should but a chocolate doughnut in that fat F**ks mouth put it on live TV and shoot him in the head so his mother and relatives can watch him die like officer Cassidys family watched him die in a video tape. Sell it for $19.95 and donate all the money to the Police Officers survivor fund. It is going to cost us tax payers a fortune to feed that Fat piece of S**t.
