A man was killed and police believe another was injured during a shooting yesterday morning in West Philadelphia.
An unidentified man was found shortly after 1 a.m. with gunshot wounds to his chest at 42nd Street and Girard Avenue, police said. He was pronounced dead at 4:40 a.m. at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania. Police found ballistic evidence that suggested the gunbattle had spanned three blocks.
Police believe a 23-year-old man who showed up at HUP about 1:20 a.m. with gunshots to his legs and arms was shot in the same area about the same time.
Jail time for resisting arrest
Tyree Lawson of Philadelphia was sentenced yesterday to 21 months in federal prison for trying to impede U.S. marshals from arresting him in April 2008. The sentence will be served consecutively to a state sentence Lawson is serving.
He was sentenced to 14 to 28 years in state prison last month on charges of attempted murder, aggravated assault and related offenses. Authorities said Lawson struck U.S. Marshal Steve Mason with his vehicle and fractured his wrist as he and other officers were attempting to arrest Lawson in 2008.
Cop dragged by fleeing driver
A Philadelphia police officer suffered minor injuries after he was dragged about 20 feet by a fleeing motorist during a traffic stop at Wayne Avenue and Apsley Street, in Germantown, about 12:45 a.m. yesterday.
The operator of the red Mercedes-Benz reportedly stole it from his ex-employer and left behind his identification with police when he fled. The car was found at 7 a.m. on Rittenhouse Street near Germantown Avenue, but police were still looking for the driver, whom they would not identify.
The officersuffered abrasions and contusions to arms and legs, was treated at Albert Einstein Medical Center and released.
2010 Census - it counts!
Mayor Nutter launched "Philly Counts!" - the city's campaign to boost awareness of the 2010 census - at City Hall yesterday. During the event, he named the honorary co-chairs of the city's Complete Count committees, which are designed to reach out to specific community groups. He also signed an executive order mandating that city employees, including police, would be barred from asking anyone his immigration status, so that Philadelphia residents feel secure about the confidentiality of the count.
Lawyer announces candidacy
Gail M. Conner, a lawyer and Barack Obama delegate to last year's Democratic National Convention, announced her candidacy yesterday in the 7th Congressional District race.
Conner will face state Rep. Bryan Lentz and political consultant E. Teresa Touey in the Democratic primary for the seat being vacated by U.S. Rep. Joe Sestak, who is running for the Senate.
