2 pols step up to try to keep regatta in town for 2010

Two city councilmen said yesterday that they will try to help keep the Dad Vail Regatta on the Schuylkill - where thousands of scullers have raced in the event annually since 1953.

Councilmen Bill Green and Curtis Jones Jr. said they were hoping that some combination of lowered fees and city funding would keep the regatta from moving out of town.

Backers from Rumson, N.J., have sent regatta organizers a $100,000 check to show their interest in hosting the 2010 race, according a source who asked not to be identified.

For those pushing to keep the regatta in Philadelphia, financing is key.

"First, we have to make the city justify the costs and make sure they understand the [regatta's] economic impact, which is why another jurisdiction has figured that out and paid them to come," Green said.

"The regatta spotlights us in a positive light," Jones said, "and it's one of our signature events. We're going to have to take a hard look at the budget."

Officials from the Fairmount Park Commission, the Managing Director's Office, the City Representative's Office and regatta organizers are scheduled to meet Friday to discuss the situation.

Race organizers sent a letter dated Nov. 2 to city and state officials warning that the race may have to be moved because city costs have doubled in recent years and corporate giving has dipped by more than 60 percent.

Jack Galloway, chairman of the Dad Vail Regatta Organizing Committee (DVROC), declined to discuss the letter until after he meets with city officials on Friday. He declined to say how much money would be needed to keep the regatta, which is run by volunteers, in Philadelphia.

In the letter, DVROC President Jim Hanna warned that levies and other charges had drained DVROC's treasury, and that without new funds or city relief in 2010, they would not be able to host a regatta in 2011.

The Dad Vail Regatta is not the only regatta that has been affected by the weak economy.

Earlier this year, the Philadelphia Frostbite Regatta decided to move to the Cooper River in Camden County for its 2009 staging because city budget troubles had threatened to sink the event, said race organizer Ken Shaw.

in 2011, if somehow Bill Green is elected Mayor, I truly hope that a Couuncilman Sharif Street or Jesse Rendell or Wilson Goode will be constantly second guessing his every move and nitpicking like he does to Nutter.

Smart move. Nutter is pushing out all of our traditions. He is penny wise and dollar foolish. He should be focused on getting rid of all the deadwood in city goverment including Camilia Bennett, her dog walkers and Latrice Bryant's 90k B jobs.

no tax dollars should go toward the regatta. these people are no different than anybody else who had to cancel or down grade thier events cause of the citys budget problem. philadelphias new years day parade is a signiture event that is televized across the country and that didn't come into play when it was down sized so why should the regatta be any different?

Save Latrice's job above all else. We must honor our civic values, beer runs and booty calls on the taxpayer dime.

The regatta imports college students and their friends and relatives from around the country. The dollars they spend here are from outside our regional economy. Think of it as a convention. Also, these are young highly educated future professionals and decision makers. Their value to us, is that they come to Philadelphia, early in their adult lives and gain an impression of the city and what its people can and cannot do. The promotional value on top of the dollars dropped here is more important. We have no image outside of the city other than what we can make if and when we get people to come here. We need to think strategically about what we already have sold the outside world on and its value to us. If they go elsewhere, and good times come back, what kind of investment will we have to make to get the same kind of event with all of its benefits or how much more will we have to spend to bring back something of value we should not have let go in the first place.

This will be a big lose for the Delaware Valley since the new planned location is nowhere near Philadelphia or its sorrounding areas. Bring this event back to Philadelphia or at a minimum to Camden County NJ.

bendover, is it too inconvenient for you to accept the simple fact that the City benefits from the Tourist Dollars of these multi day events AND thinks it can overcharge and pad the payroll for it's non negiotionable fees, that not only recover their "costs" but make an additional PROFIT. They're using your username to guide the Park/City behavior. Are you related to any of these Park people? Maybe one of the electricians who check in in the morning and then go home til quit time

Bendover, that was harsh! I forgot for a moment that everyone can express their opinion. I regret that I took it personal. Strike the last 2 sentences.

A parade on water? Yes, it deserves no more attention than other events cancelled by the city. A bunch of outside the city college stiffs, from the well to do, pushing cars into the river, and camping out, doing what? Drugs, drinking and sex under the Big Top. Let them pay for it, and keep the roadway open to the motorist that pay taxes to use it. No cops either!
