Camden’s Sears building another step closer to demolition

Camden City Council unanimously approved an ordinance tonight that effectively cleared the way for bulldozers to demolish the historic Sears building on Admiral Wilson Boulevard.

The property now can be transfered via eminent domain to the Campbell Soup Co. as part of an expanded redevelopment zone. Campbell is constructing a $90 million world headquarters for itself and a 60-acre office park for other businesses.

The council followed the planning board's recommendation that the building be included in the Campbell redevelopment area because its owner, Philadelphia clothing manufacturer Ilan Zaken, had failed to turn the vacant structure into an operating business.

Under eminent domain, the property can be purchased by the Camden Redevelopment Agency and sold to Campbell. The planning board still must formally approve demolition of the building.
