Sam Rohrer seeks to be Pa. governor

State Rep. Sam Rohrer, a champion of abolishing the school property tax in Pennsylvania, is poised to enter what is fast becoming a crowded field of candidates for governor.

A Republican from Berks County, Rohrer e-mailed contacts around the state yesterday inviting them to attend a town-hall meeting Nov. 17 in West Lawn at which he planned to announce his decision on a run for governor "and begin a statewide conversation" about issues.

Rohrer, in a phone interview, played it a bit coy, saying he wasn't quite prepared to declare himself a candidate. He clearly wanted to allow for a morsel of suspense.

The two announced Republicans in the field - state Attorney General Tom Corbett and U.S. Rep. Jim Gerlach - have far greater name recognition, an earlier start on raising money, and a bigger political-support base. And Rohrer's 128th House District is mostly within Gerlach's Sixth Congressional District.

But Rohrer hopes to capture the political mood he said he saw reflected in Tuesday's elections - the feeling that taxes and spending are too high.

"Have I often been described as one of the most conservative members of the House?" he asked rhetorically. "Yes, I have been, and I'd say that's true."

Rohrer, 54, has been a repeat sponsor of a bill to eliminate the school property tax and replace it with an expanded sales tax, gaming revenue, and royalties from new gas fields.

Michael Barley, spokesman for the Republican State Committee, said, "The more people that are interested in running on the Republican ticket - that speaks to the fact that we can win. We are excited about it."

Five top Democrats also are running for governor. The party primaries will be in May.

I will be entering the race too. Why not? With a crowded field, one might stand a chance.

Eliminating school property tax would be a disaster. He's basically trying to move the funding from the wealthy to the poor. And how can "the most conservative mamber of the House" support gambling??? What an idiot.

Sam Rohrer is without a doubt one of the most honest members of the state House. He would be an excellent choice for Governor. MikeP, the Rohrer plan for elimination of property taxes is supported by 34 taxpayer advocacy groups statewide and does not move the funding from the wealthy to the poor as you assume - it will save 10,000 homes annually from tax sales in PA. Learn the facts at the grassroots www.ptcc.us. Rep. Rohere DOES NOT support gambling and never has. But legalized gambling is a reality in Pennsylvania and he is simply using the revenue for a good purpose.

Sorry, abowie, but I'm not Sam Rohrer. I'm not a politician, I'm a taxpayer activist and if you want to know who I am go to the website in my post above. And BTW, Sam is far from being a "hack".

pataxpayer, simple question: If schools were funded by sales tax versus property tax, would low income residents pay a larger percent? It's a fact and you're a liar. Take your racist idea and shove it. If this Rohrer guy was such an honorable man, he wouldn't propose using tax revenue from gambling. He'd have pinciples. He relies on the support of the ignorant. Moving to sales tax would benefit the wealthy and trying to hide that fact makes him and you devious, dishonest and untrustworthy. But that's only because if you told the truth you would get little support. Vote for truth!!!

Legalized abortion is a reality in Pennsylvania. Does he support taxing abortions to fund schools? Creep.

MikeP, you have no idea what you're talking about. No, it's not a fact even though you, in your ignorance, seem to think it is. Low income people already pay sales tax on most of the items they buy. The expansion of the sales tax base includes services like lawn mowing, pool cleaning, and other services not generally not used by the poor and actually makes the sales tax LESS regressive. The expansion exempts life necessities like food, clothing, medical expenses, public tranportation and heating fuels. Further, the Rohrer bill also eliminates the 0.5% local school EIT and exchanges it for a 0.5% increase in the state PIT. Those earning less than $35K/year pay EIT from the first dollar earned but are forgiven the PIT, saving them up to $175/year in taxes. You are obviously too lazy or ignorant to learn the facts of the plan and shoot off your partisan mouth without knowing what you're talking about. And don't dare to call me a liar - you know nothing about me and I do not lie! Ever. Name calling is the last defense of the small-minded.

I like Sam Rohrer, too...the people upstate...must be outraged...at the fact that a lot of funds are going to the Sodom on the Schuylkill known as Philadelphia...a big waster and spender of Commonwealth dollars... Pa tax...don't listen to abowie...he is a weenie... I know you...and you are not Rohrer...you are an honest person worried about the waste in Harrisburg...

pataxpayer, so you're saying that if schools are funded by sales tax, the sales tax won't go up??? Like you said, low income tax payers already pay sales tax on most items they buy so if the rate goes up so does their share. Maybe you sould read the information on your own site that says moving to a sales tax will have little effect on the unfairness of the sales tax to lower income consumers. Your site also says the sales tax will make it easier to raise taxes because it's less visible. I thought Republicans were against raising taxes??? There's enough info our your site to cover your racist tracks while also making the racists happy. Taxes on services that the wealthy use will never happen and we'll see Republicans fighting any Earned Income or sales tax credit for low income residents. It's called socialism, right? I don't know who you think you're fooling. Down in the Basement, thanks for helping to prove my point. Philly is the Sodom on the Schuykill, huh? And you're a racist and a bigot. If and when upstate people start actually producing revenue in excess of expenditures, they can complain about where it's being spent. But as long as the Philly suburbs are carrying the state, you redneck, backwoods idiots shouldn't have much say.

MikeP, you said you looked at the site. Did you? It says quite specifically that the SUT rate DOES NOT increase - the plan broadens the base of taxable items. Where do you get this "racist" BS? This has nothing to do with race - homeowners of all races across the state, including Philadelphia, are losing their homes because of uncontrolled property taxes. In your posts you've managed to to call me and others "racist", "redneck", "backwoods idiot", "creep", and "liar". You're quite the intelligent debater, aren't you? That's a typical ploy of the uninformed - when you can't show intelligent thought, insult the opponent. I once had a co-worker who always said "Never try to teach a pig to sing. It wastes your time and annoys the pig". Although I've attempted to be polite and use logic and reason you've wasted a lot of my time. Respond if you wish, but my participation in this conversation is finished.

MikeP, I have researched the Commonwealth Caucus Plan, it's exactly what we need, the poor excuse is always used by the Dems, The propery tax is breaking the back of the middle class and causes up to 40 thousand families to lose thier homes. No one will ever own thier own house thanks to the antiquated property tax.
