Police ID 3 slaying victims, driver who hit tree

Police have released the names of four men who died over the weekend - three shooting victims and a driver who hit a tree on Roosevelt Boulevard.

Shortly before 10 last night, a 2004 Honda Accord was speeding in the outer lanes of Roosevelt Boulevard near D Street, then crossed into the center lanes, lost control, went onto the median, flipped several times and struck a tree, according to police.

The driver, Derrick Avent, 23, of Olney, was thrown from the car, and pronounced dead at the scene, police said.

Avent, who lived in the 300 block of West Sommerville Avenue, was alone in the car. No one else was injured.

At 5:45 yesterday afternoon, an Olney man was found shot in the chest in the 2100 block of North 19th Street in North Philadelphia.

Sharif Garner, 18, of the 2300 block of West Edgely Street, was pronounced dead at 7:03 p.m. at Temple University Hospital.

Yesterday morning, shortly after midnight, a wounded man was found near Seventh and Spruce Streets in Center City.

The victim, who had a gunshot wound to the back, was Rahfeak Anthony Griggs, 17, of the 2200 block of McKean Street in South Philadelphia.

He was pronounced dead at 12:31 a.m. at Jefferson University Hospital.

Police have also named the West Oak Lane man who died in Kensington early Saturday morning.

He was Bryan Jubilee, 43, of the 7500 block of Rugby Street.

He was found, shot once in the head, shortly before 1 a.m. in the 500 block of Westmoreland Street, and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police are trying to determine motives and are seeking suspects in the three homicides.
