The murder rate may be way down from two years ago, but the city just saw a spike in violence, with four slayings in less than 14 hours.
This morning, police identified three of the victims and announced two arrests.
The identity of a fourth victim, a Southwest Philadelphia shop owner shot during an apparent robbery, was released last night. (See link to "Gunman sought" at right.)
The arrests were for a West Philadelphia slaying that happened at 11 a.m. yesterday near 64th and Callowhill Streets.
Arceno Jones, 25, who lived nearby on the 400 block of North 64 Street, was found shot multiple times and was pronounced dead shortly after arriving at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania.
Taken into custody were Shirvin McGarrell, 22, of the 5000 block of Kershaw Street, and Shay Odom, 20, of the 6100 block of Callowhill Street.
The shooting may have stemmed from an argument, police said.
Last night around 8 o'clock, police found a 44-year-old man on the ground with gunshots to the chest and back in the 400 block of West Norris Street in North Philadelphia.
Jose Rivera, of the 4300 block of North 19th Street in Nicetown, died about 40 minutes later at Temple University Hospital.
Investigators are working to determine motives and suspects.
Those two homicides hiked the year's toll to 217, as of midnight, down from 239 killings last year, and 304 in 2007.
Early this morning, a North Philadelphia shooting proved proved fatal for a 23-year-old man.
At about 12:30 a.m., officers went to the 2500 block of North Colorado Street and found James Stansbury on the ground with gunshots wounds to the back and right leg, police said.
Stansbury was taken to Temple University Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 1:44 a.m.
He lived about a half-mile away, in the 3100 block of North Colorado Street.
Police knew of no motives or suspects this morning.
