Man arrested in Fairmount Park sexual assaults

Police arrested a man on charges of sexually assaulting two women early today morning after he picked them up in his car and drove them to Fairmount Park.

The man, whose name was not released, picked up the women on Kensington Avenue about 4 a.m., police said.

He drove them to Fairmount Park, near the 3600 block of Greenland Drive, then pulled a gun and raped one of them. The second woman was sexually assaulted but got away and called the police.

Police pulled over the man about 6 a.m. and arrested him.

Police said the attack does not appear to be related to any recent rapes in the area. Two women joggers were raped in the park last month, raising concerns that the so-called "Fairmount Park rapist" had struck again.

Investigators have said the circumstances in those attacks were different from each other and from the pattern of the man who raped four women in city parks between 2003 and 2007. That man has not been caught.
