Contract awarded for stretch of Rte. 202 bypass

Construction of the northern stretch of an 8.6-mile Route 202 bypass between Route 63 in Montgomery County and Route 611 in Bucks is expected to start in October, the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation announced yesterday.

A $42 million contract was awarded to James D. Morrissey Inc., one of six companies that bid on the job. The firm will build a 3.4-mile section of highway between Pickertown Road and Route 611 in Warrington and Doylestown Townships.

The parkway will have four travel lanes between Routes 63 and 463, and two lanes between Routes 463 and 611.

The bypass is expected to relieve congestion for motorists between Montgomeryville and Doylestown, PennDot regional executive Lester C. Toaso said in a statement.

In November, PennDot started building the southern section, a 1.8-mile stretch between Routes 63 and 463. The agency plans to solicit bids starting Sept. 3 for construction of the central section connecting Route 463 and Pickertown Road.

The $200 million bypass, financed with state money, is scheduled to open in 2011.

PennDot said the two-lane northern segment will have one travel lane in each direction with left turn lanes at all intersections. It will also have bike lanes, new traffic signals, a 12-foot-wide pedestrian path, trailhead parking, and a new bridge over Neshaminy Creek.
