Brothers sentenced in shooting that killed 1 wounded 5

Two brothers who fired on a crowd outside of a Camden fried chicken joint in 2006, killing one person and wounding five others, were sentenced yesterday after pleading guilty to different charges, the Camden County Prosecutor's office said.

Angel Alicea, 32, of Camden, was sentenced to 21 years in state prison for aggravated manslaughter while his brother Joey, 29, also of Camden, received eight years for aggravated assault at their sentencings by Superior Court Judge Samuel Natal.

At 3:41 a.m. on June 4, 2006, the Alicea brothers approached a crowd hanging out in the street outside Crown Fried Chicken, 1516 Mount Ephraim Ave, looking to shoot two people they believed had broken into their home a few weeks earlier, stolen drugs and hit a girlfriend.

With a gun in each hand, Angel shot at his targets, one of whom returned fire. The brothers traded fire, killing bystander Rashell Harmond, 18, of Camden, and wounding three other people.

Their two targets also were wounded but survived.

The brothers will have to serve 85 percent of their sentences before becoming eligible for parole.
