Angelotti, of Medford, had exited a car stopped on the shoulder of westbound Route 38 and was attempting to cross the highway when he was struck by a tractor-trailer at 5:05 p.m., authorities said.
He was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.
Police said that Angelotti's fiance, Jessica Allard, was at the wheel when Angelotti rounded the rear of the parked Pontiac Vibe.
Angelotti stepped into the path of the 18-wheeler driven by William Linville of Town Creek, Ala., who told police he saw a man but was unable to avoid hitting him.
Linville, who was driving a Rowe Machinery truck from Haleyville, Ala., was not injured, said Lumberton Detective Tony DiLoreto. He has not been charged, DiLoreto said.
Authorities were uncertain why Angelotti and Allard were pulled over and where the Ossi Vocational Technical High School graduate was headed on foot.
Angelotti's brother, David, a Lumberton volunteer firefighter who monitors EMS calls, said yesterday that he heard the dispatch about an accident on Route 38. He soon learned that his brother was the victim, David Angelotti said.
Daniel Angelotti's mother was driving near the scene of the accident and got caught in the detour that resulted when Route 38 was shut down, his brother said.
