Called for burglary, cops spot pot

Police responding to reports of a burglary in progress on Bouvier Street near McKean in South Philadelphia uncovered a marijuana grow house yesterday about 10:45 a.m.

Three men were taken into custody, though it was not immediately clear if they lived in the house or were attempting to burgle it.

Vandals damage church icon

Vandals damaged a five-foot-tall statue of Saint Rita at St. Rita's Church, on Broad Street near Ellsworth in South Philadelphia, overnight Saturday into Sunday morning. Police are searching for suspects.

2G reward for murder info

The Citizens Crime Commission is administering a $2,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the killers of Rodney Abrams, who was found shot to death early on Feb. 2, on Bouvier Street near Wingohocking, Nicetown-Tioga.

To be eligible for the reward, information must be called in to the Crime Commission Tipline, and the caller must obtain a code number from the operator. Call 215-546-TIPS.

Last day to vote for murals

Today is the last day for Philadelphians to vote on one of two mural designs, based on the theme "This We Believe," a first-ever citywide project of the Mural Arts Program.

Explosion at Delco refinery

An explosion at a Delaware County refinery last night shook up houses and worried residents. The explosion occurred about 10 p.m. at the refinery on Blueball Avenue near Ridge Road in Marcus Hook and burned throughout the night. Several engines from surrounding communities were dispatched to fight the flames. A strange odor was reported but authorities have not identified the source. Authorities have made no evacuation to the surrounding area.

Del. diver dies off Barnegat

The Coast Guard transported a diver by helicopter Saturday to its air station in Atlantic City from 30 miles east of Barnegat, N.J., after he was found unconscious 125 feet below the surface of the water. He was identified as Gene Wite, 42, of Middletown, Del. Emergency medical personnel pronounced him dead.

Jailed for car deaths of pals

Kevin Demichiel, 19, has been sentenced to 11 1/2 to 23 months in prison for an Oct. 18 crash in Elk Township, Chester County, that killed two of his best friends.

Demichiel pleaded guilty to vehicular homicide, involuntary manslaughte and DUI. *
