Police kill knife-wielding man

A Gloucester City man who said he wanted to kill himself was fatally shot by police after he approached them with a knife, authorities said yesterday.

Police went to the home of Carl Hurlock, 28, in the 500 block of Dukewood Avenue, on Friday night after being told that he had a knife, Camden County Prosecutor Warren Faulk said.

They found Hurlock outside threatening to stab himself, Faulk said. Officers negotiated with Hurlock for about an hour as he entered and exited his home repeatedly.

Then Hurlock allegedly approached officers with the knife raised in a threatening manner. According to officers, he refused to drop it despite repeated orders.

A Haddon Township officer and a Gloucester City officer shot him several times, Faulk said. Their names were not released.

Faulk said his office would review the shooting, which is standard procedure when an officer injures or kills someone with his service weapon.
