Clout: This week, it's one Dem thing after another

THEY'RE articulate! They're bright! They're clean! They're good-looking! They're Democrats!

And they're in Denver for the quadrennial TV infomercial known as the Democratic National Convention.

While you won't be seeing any slogans about bright and clean (except during the Tide commercials), you will be seeing and hearing a lot about change.

The theme of U.S. Sen. Barack Obama's presidential acceptance speech is "change you can believe in."

His newly minted running-mate, Delaware Sen. Joe Biden, who is about as inside the Beltway as you can be, "has brought change to Washington," Obama said.

The convention will air clips daily of everyday Americans calling for change.

Panhandlers outside the Pepsi Center will be asking for change.

Change, change, change.

Then the Republicans will be in your face next week with their convention. Their theme: "Country First."

Yeah! We'll be ready for some LeAnn Rimes after all that loose change talk.

But first, here's a look at the week ahead:

Tonight: Michelle night!

The Dems' subject tonight is "One Nation," but the highlight will be Michelle Obama's speech. Right-wing pundits have portrayed her as a bitter radical. The National Review featured her on the cover under the headline "Mrs. Grievance." Look for her to undermine that image by talking about her daughters and showing a bit of Jackie O style.

Tomorrow night: Hillary night!

The subject is "Renewing America's Promise," but the mission is for primetime speaker U.S. Sen. Hillary Clinton to protect Obama from a PUMA attack. PUMA is the acronymn for "party unity my ass," a coalition of Clinton supporters who resent her treatment by Obama and the media.

Wednesday night: Biden night!

The topic is "Securing America's Future," which will give Biden a chance to strut his best issue - foreign policy - in his acceptance speech. Also speaking: Bill Clinton. Forecast: Windy.

Thursday night: Obama night!

Obama, whose "we're one people" keynote speech at the 2004 convention brought down the house, will try to top it with his acceptance speech before 75,000 people at Invesco Mile High Stadium. Adding to the pressure: It will be the 45th anniversary of Martin Luther King Jr.'s "I Have a Dream" speech.

Friday: McCain day!
