Referee shot at Strawberry Mansion basketball game

A 42-year-old man who was a referee in a basketball game in Strawberry Mansion was shot in the leg last night, police said this morning.

The man was struck by a bullet in the back of his left thigh about 9 p.m. at 33d and Diamond Streets, said Officer Jillian Russell. He was taken to Temple University Hospital and treated for his wound.

No arrest was reported.

Shortly after 10 p.m., a 19-year-old man was fatally shot in Southwest Philadelphia.

Luis Gomez Whitfield was shot multiple times in the head and chest in the 1200 block of South Wilton Street, which is the same block where he lives, Russell said.

He was taken the Hospital at the University of Pennsylvania and pronounced dead at 11:21 p.m.

No arrest was reported.
