City to spray for mosquitoes in S. Phila. park

Franklin Delano Roosevelt Park in South Philadelphia will be closed at dusk Thursday evening so Department of Public Health officials can spray for mosquitoes that could be carrying West Nile virus.

Recent samples taken from the 350-acre park, which is bounded by Broad Street, Pattison Avenue, 26th Street and I-95, indicate that some adult mosquitoes could be carrying the potentially deadly virus.

The officials will use a synthetic spray called Anvil 10-10, which kills mosquitoes on contact but has no ill effect on humans.

Here's hoping Jamie Moyer is sharp. If he isn't, it will be a long Sunday night. Typically, however, Moyer gorges on young hitters.
